Warum bestimmt mein Aussehen so viel in meinem Leben?

Welche Worte beschreiben dich?

Viele unterschiedliche Organisationen waren beim Transborder Camp anwesend.

Inauguration de l’exposition „Nothing about us without us“ à Nuremberg

Le jeudi 5 septembre à 19 heures, l’exposition „nothing about us without us“ sera solennellement inaugurée dans les locaux de Diversity Media à Nuremberg.

English

Dear subscribers of Colourful Voices, dear free radios,
Here comes the August newsletter of the „netzwerk medien.vielfalt!“. This newsletter is also available in French and English. We look forward to your feedback and suggestions. Have fun reading!

Will I ever fit in?

Conforming in a society where no one looks like you – a text from Megha Uchil

I’m a proud Australian, who has many talents which include surviving 45ºC summers but also -18ºC winters, not getting sunburnt, and opening a bottle with a lighter (sometimes) just to name a few.

But when I introduce myself in person, I’m most likely reduced to my exotic appearance.

You see, I get my skin color from my father. An armor to protect me from the harsh Indian sun. A rich smooth chocolate brown which many apparently envy. But I myself never saw what others loved about my skin. I was too busy trying to fit in and distance myself from my Indian identity. Yes, I have Indian roots as well as an Indian name, but I’ve never lived in India, I can‘t speak any useful Indian languages and I sure don‘t call myself an Indian.

I‘ve always tried to make it clear that I was a true blue Aussie, but it‘s difficult when my looks scream something else. I used to be ashamed to be Indian because I never fit in the Indian cliques in Australia due to the feeling that I wasn‘t “Indian enough”.

Recently I finished reading “The Good Immigrant”, a collection of 21 essays about being black, Asian and minority ethnicity in Britain. Other than triggering an identity crisis, it got me thinking. Why do my looks define so much in my life?

Why is white the default? Why do innocent black people get shot? Why do all kinds of Muslims get called aside for background checks at the airport? Why are Asian kids supposed to be good at maths? But most of all; Why is the world so unfair?

Why do we have to deal with the prejudices of being multicultural instead of having the same chances as a Caucasian?

A lot of people reading this won’t understand, but for the few that do, I’m sorry that we’ve gotten the “judged-by-looks-before-even-opening-mouth” card. We will always be the immigrants, the foreigners, the people who are told to go back to their country even though they’re born and raised here. We will always get the question: “Where do you really come from?” And the confused stares until we explain that our ancestors come from xyz.

One thing I’m still learning is: no matter how well I speak German, or how many dirndls I own or beers I can drink, I will almost always stand out in a crowd. I just have to accept the fact that I won’t fit in and that is absolutely fine. Fitting in is boring anyway.

A portrait of the editor Ahmet Ç.

What words describe you?
„There is always a solution!“

What should people know about you if they want to get to know you?
I love people and I like to support them. But when I feel that people are going behind my back, I pull back.

What are issues that are important to you?
In general, human rights and freedom of expression and especially the freedom of the Kurdish language and Kurdistan are important to me.

You are part of the „netzwerk medien.viefalt!“ What are your different roles there?
I am the local coordinator of Newcomer News. We are the intercultural editorial team of the free radio station Wüste Welle in Tübingen (Baden-Württemberg), which is part of the netzwerk medien.vielfalt!

Since I joined the network, I try to support many events of the network on a voluntary basis. Not always, but usually I organise my own workshops in the network, try to participate in brainstorming sessions, offer ideas for communication problems, try to help with organisation, etc. This has given me the opportunity to get to know most of the people in the network. And I want to contribute more to acting, voice training, theatre, cinema and communication.

What is your opinion about „Colourful Voices“ and the „netzwerk medien.vielfalt!“?
I see this network of people from different cultures as a great wealth and I would like to see it develop further.

What is your wish for the future of the network?
The most popular topic this year is the future of the network! We are trying to create a media association of people with migration history within the network. I think this is important and it makes sense for us to have a „Migrant Media Association“, but on the other hand, this idea should be developed and turned into a system where other good people in the network can participate. If there are only newcomers, then there are not enough colourful voices! The opposite is not right either. We can think more in a way that allows intercultural coexistence. I think that it is not easy to capture this beautiful energy, this unity is valuable and this value should be protected and developed with great care.

Portrait: The migrant editorial team SpeakOutLoud!

Recently, a new editorial team joined our network: the editorial team „SpeakL_out“ (SpeakOutLoud!) will soon be broadcasting its third programme in Chemnitz.

They want to make the city more diverse, break down prejudices and create intercultural networking without denying themselves. Media makers with the most diverse backgrounds come together here and jointly create Radio T’s international magazine.

For our monthly newsletter, we talked to Fatima Maged about the beginnings and the editorial work.

The Transborder Camp in Nantes

A text by Rufine Songue

The Transborder Camp is an anti-racist event, mainly on the theme of freedom of movement, which took place in Nantes from 12 to 17 July. More than 800 people came to Nantes from very different places in the world, for example from Mali, from Mexico, from Sudan, from Germany, France, Belgium and many more. Many organisations were represented, including some editors of the medien.vielfalt network!

Many different organisations were present at the Transborder Camp. One of them was Top Manta, a self-organisation of refugees from Spain. They are active in Barcelona. In their work they emphasise that products are legal and allowed to travel worldwide, but people are not! People are made illegal!

Why is it important for us to participate in the Transborder Camp? Rouby from the editorial office Our Voice Freiburg, also part of netzwerk medien.vielfalt! answers this question: „The Transborder Camp is, in my opinion, a very important meeting, because there we go beyond our usual meetings, the meetings on a national level. We meet people from different countries, from different horizons and share the experiences we have in different countries in Europe. People from outside Europe, for example from Africa, share experiences with us that we cannot even imagine here. It is a meeting that gives us the opportunity to discover realities that we know about, but of which we have only vague ideas. It is also a chance to meet people who work on specific issues and who have a specific and real experience of the situation of migrants, be it in Sahara with Alarmphone Sahara, be it in countries like Nigeria, Mali, Morocco… It is a great chance for migrant self-organisations or support groups to network beyond their countries. You can network on different issues, different struggles or even gender specific. We can create a deep connection between our different struggles here and that’s really great!“

Exhibition opening of „Nothing about us without us“ in Nuremberg

„We are media makers with experience of flight or migration. We experience racism and discrimination. There is a lot of talk about us, but almost never with us.“ Since 2020, the netzwerk medien.vielfalt! has been a nationwide radio and media project that not only takes a critical look at existing gaps in the German media landscape, but also actively fills them itself.

With the exhibition „nothing about us without us“, media makers and radio editors of the network give insights into their work in free radio, but also as podcasters or social media activists. The exhibition also explores the question of how reporting, journalistic (non-)diversity and media representation are connected and what ideas and needs there are to change something about the existing conditions. And of course, the exhibition provides insights into the network medien.vialfalt! and its joint activities and experiences as a nationwide association of radio and media professionals.

On Thursday 5 September at 7 pm, the exhibition „nothing about us without us“ will be ceremoniously opened in the rooms of Diversity Media in Nuremberg. On this occasion, a panel discussion will be held on the topic „Was that racist now?! The role of the media in the (re)production of everyday racism“. The panel discussion can be seen on site at Diversity Media e.V. at Leonhardstr. 20A in Nuremberg (Plärrer stop accessible by U1, U2, U3, tram line 4 and 6), but will also be broadcast live at: diversitymedia.info/live.

Dates:
